Surgery with a chain saw
A chain saw is not often seen as the tool of choice in boat repair, but it's one of his most important tools, according to Steve Hutchinson, one of the most sought after shipwrights in the Bay Area. In this photo, Steve uses a chainsaw guided by a custom jig, to carve away the damaged portion of a wooden mast. "It's much faster for some tasks," stated Steve, "and in this case, it saved the customer four hours of labor costs." The mast is from the wooden ketch, "Stroma of Mey."
